Cause rising damp
Rising damp is moisture absorbed by the building structure (and usually the foundation) as a result of contact with a damp or wet surface. The capillary action of the walls causes the moisture to be transported upward with known consequences such as:
- Mold on the wall
- Higher humidity
- Discoloration and moisture spots
- Damp walls (and loosening wallpaper or paint)
Expressions of rising damp
Rising damp always manifests itself just above the surface level. It is a phenomenon that therefore cannot occur on higher floors (moisture problems located there are usually related to the penetration of moisture).
