What is condensation moisture?

Condensation moisture is a natural process that occurs in most homes, although it is not always a problem.

Condensation moisture occurs when moist, warm air comes into contact with a cold surface, where the air then condenses. On those cold surfaces, that warm air forms droplets and thus becomes liquid.

Usually you see condensation moisture on windows and on mirrors. Those are examples of when condensation is not a moisture problem. But, condensation moisture doesn't just adhere to windows and mirrors. It adheres to all kinds of (cold) places, including porous surfaces such as a wall. That's when condensation moisture does become a moisture problem.

Causes of condensation moisture

Condensation occurs mainly in rooms with high humidity, which are not (or cannot be) properly ventilated and where the moisture present in the air does not find an outlet. Condensation can also occur on exterior walls. In that case, a thermal bridge is usually the problem.

The most common causes are as follows:

  • Indirect sources of moisture as the breathing and perspiration of the occupants.
  • Direct sources of moisture such as cooking, washing, drying laundry, mopping, areas with many plants, washing dishes, showering, bathing or water heaters without drains.

What are the consequences of condensation moisture?

Condensation has many consequences for your health and your home.

  • The first major consequence of condensation moisture is high humidity. This sounds harmless at first glance, but excessive humidity brings a lot of things with it. For one thing, it is bad for your health. Among other things, it causes breathing problems and coughing.
  • It also creates excessive energy bills. The more humid the room is, the harder it is to heat it.
  • Another consequence of condensation moisture comes somewhat together with high humidity. This is because it also causes mold to grow on the walls. Mold on the walls, just like high humidity, can cause a lot of health problems. Again, these are mainly respiratory problems and respiratory infections.
  • Is the mold really bad? If so, it can even affect the strength of your home. The paintwork and stucco will begin to peel off, and the wallpaper will no longer adhere properly. This often leads to unpleasant odors in your home.

So, as you can see, you really need to address a moisture problem caused by condensation.

How do you recognize condensation moisture?

Condensation moisture is often fairly easy to identify. You can speak of condensation moisture if you notice the following things:

  • Repeated drops or moisture circles on windows and walls
  • Dampness of furniture, walls or clothing
  • A musty smell
  • Mold on walls, windows or furniture
  • Health problems such as joint pain or headaches

Dissolving condensation moisture

There is one major solution for condensation moisture: ventilation. You can try to take action here yourself by regularly opening your windows or installing moisture traps. But, not all rooms can be ventilated equally well naturally, so sometimes the solution is to have a mechanical ventilation system installed. Such a ventilation system removes hot and humid air and is a systematic and durable solution. Did you have a balanced ventilation system installed? Then that also brings in fresh air.

Ventilation in the fight against condensation ... and viruses

Ventilation not only has the benefit of helping condensation moisture get out of your house. With a little modification, you can also have ionization installed in that ventilation. That technology purifies your home of all the particulates you don't want to breathe, like particulates and pollen. But it also purifies the air of germs such as viruses.

So do you want to deal with the moisture problem of condensation and at the same time purge the corona virus from the air? Then balanced ventilation with ionization is the perfect choice. For that ventilation, Aquaconsult works with the company Aeroconsult. They specialize in air conditioning and ventilation and are the only company that installs ionization technology in private homes. Technology that has been approved by the Belgian government.
