What is penetrating moisture?

Permeable moisture refers to moisture that enters through the exterior of a building and seeps through the interior walls. Precipitation, such as rain or snow, hits the exterior walls of a home, so to speak. These exterior walls then suck in the moisture and absorb it. Precipitation thus has a chance to soak into the walls.

What causes persistent moisture?

Under normal circumstances, a wall should not absorb moisture. However, there are some common causes of penetrating moisture:

  • Porous exterior walls over time
  • Cracks or grooves around window frames
  • Damaged exterior walls including damaged brick or worn joints
  • Leaking gutters or a downspout problem
  • Construction Errors

Typically, older homes are more prone to seepage, due to such things as plant growth against the exterior walls or weather conditions that weaken the exterior walls over time. But, a construction defect or leaking gutter can just as easily cause water to seep in over time.

What are possible consequences of persistent moisture?

Moisture problems are usually accompanied by negative consequences. The moisture not only damages your exterior walls, it also affects your interior walls. The wallpaper and plaster can come off the wall, where mold can develop that also does your furniture no good. This is further accompanied by low air quality and a bad odor in your home, which can cause health issues.

Are your walls insulated? Then the insulation material can also become damp, losing its insulation value. In addition, your house will also feel cold, so you will heat more and feel this in your wallet.

Thus, it is more than advisable to combat persistent moisture in a timely manner to limit further damage.
