Concrete injection: the solution to moisture problems in concrete walls

Cracks can appear in concrete structures, such as facades and walls, for a variety of reasons. These cracks can lead to moisture and stability problems, affecting the health of the concrete. If a damaged concrete wall is not treated, brittle concrete, loose pieces of concrete, concrete rot and moisture problems can occur over time.

Concrete injections are an effective method for repairing, strengthening and waterproofing concrete walls. This technique involves injecting an injection fluid into the concrete. They repair and fill concrete cracks, concrete seams, gravel nests and voids, restoring the concrete to its original strength.

How do moisture problems occur in concrete walls?

Moisture problems in concrete walls often occur as a result of cracks in the wall, which in turn can be caused by various acting forces. Some possible causes include the following:

  • A bad bilge seam. This is where a concrete basement floor and the basement walls meet. When the bilge seam is not installed, poorly installed or worn, cracks can appear.
  • A great construction weight.
  • When the concrete shrinks as it cures.
  • Ground movements.
  • Fluctuations in groundwater.
  • Thermal influences that cause the concrete wall to expand on the one hand or shrink on the other.

When the stress exceeds the resistance of the concrete, cracks appear. This can also cause moisture problems. For example, the wall can no longer properly hold back rainwater from outside or groundwater, causing you to experience seepage, rising damp or a damp basement.

How does concrete injection work?

There are different methods and injection fluids when it comes to concrete injection. Which method best suits your situation depends on the cause of the damaged concrete wall and the purpose of the repair. This is best investigated by a moisture specialist.

Typically, having concrete injected has the following steps:

  • The first step involves a thorough inspection of the concrete surface to identify cracks, voids and other defects. Depending on the results of this inspection, the appropriate injection material is chosen. Often chosen fluids are epoxy, polyurethane or acrylic.
  • Then strategic spots are drilled holes in the concrete wall. This is where the concrete liquid will be sprayed.
  • Concrete injections are used to fill all cracks, seams, gravel nests and voids in the concrete. By filling, curing and leveling these voids and cracks, the concrete becomes stronger again.
  • All elements are joined, glued and sealed.

Concrete injections with AquaConsult

AquaConsult uses its concrete injections to make concrete walls cork dry again. We only inject the robust ARTIPUR INJECT FLEX: a product designed to seal joints and cracks in concrete structures, even in the event of leaks with high water flow and pressure. After this procedure, no drop of water can penetrate the interior space through the concrete wall.

concrete injection step 1

ARTIPUR INJECT FLEX is a 1-component polyurethane injection resin that is catalyzed with ARTIPUR CAT FLEX. The dosage of the catalyst determines the polymerisation time. In liquid phase, this product is a yellowish, transparent liquid that, in contact with water, cures rapidly (depending on the ambient temperature and the dosage of the catalyst) to a tough, flexible, closed-cell polyurethane foam.
