What does wall injection involve?

What exactly do wall injections entail? Well, the principle is actually quite simple. When we treat walls against rising damp using wall injections, we proceed in a very specific way.

1. Preparing the wall for injections

First, the wall is prepared for injections. Here, plasterers repair all cracks in the damp wall. Next, holes need to be drilled in the wall at skirting board level.

2. Injecting walls with damp-proofing products

In the second step, we skillfully inject the wall with damp-proofing gel that quickly forms a water barrier layer in the pores of the wall. Immediately after injecting the wall, the gel spreads deep into the pores of the wall. The substance hardens well to form a continuous, permanent horizontal barrier. As a result, rising moisture no longer sees a passage and the wall can dry out nicely.

The depth and strength of the water-repellent layer that subsequently forms is highly dependent on the quality of the waterproofing gel. So be very picky in your choice of gel, as it is very decisive for the durability of the procedure. After all, you don't want to find out after ten years that you can start all over again. AquaConsult, for instance, therefore chose only the highest quality products including Rewah NV's top products. For injection against rising damp, this is REWAGEL Inject 3A+. This gel has been used for many years and has proven its effectiveness. The product is a result of thorough research, with approval from the BUtgb, Belgian Union for Technical Approval in the Building Industry, institute that is a member of the European Union. REWAGEL Inject 3A+ also carries the ATG label with certification ATG 2844.

Many people wonder how much injecting walls costs. However, the answer to this is not so easy to give without knowing all the parameters:

  • What is the area of the affected wall?
  • Is the moisture problem located only in the walls or also in the floor?
  • What type of wall needs to be treated? Is it an internal wall? An exterior wall? Is it a cavity wall?
  • Is the problem located in the basement or on the ground floor?
  • Are you eligible for My Rebuilding Premium from the Flemish government?
  • Which finish do you choose afterwards?

AquaConsult is happy to help you When calculating the cost of wall injections for your situation.

What are the disadvantages of injecting walls?

Although injecting walls is the most effective method against rising damp, there are also some drawbacks. It is a technical procedure that requires drilling holes in the masonry, which involves dust and temporary inconvenience. In addition, this technique is specifically designed for rising damp. For other problems such as penetrating moisture or condensation moisture injecting walls does not offer a solution.

Another aspect to keep in mind that can be experienced as a drawback is the long drying time. Because the wall has to dry out naturally after treatment before you can re-plaster or paint, you often have to be patient for months. In the humid Belgian climate, depending on the wall thickness, this process can take quite some time before the finishing coat can be placed.

Can I inject walls against moisture myself?

Although there are DIY kits on the market, we do not recommend this for a permanent moisture solution. Proper injection of the walls requires an accurate preliminary analysis with professional equipment to determine the depth, drilling distance and the right amount of injection medium. Mistakes in execution can lead to incomplete barriers, which means the moisture problem will simply return over time.

Moreover, with DIY work, you lose the official guarantee that a specialised firm like AquaConsult does offer. In regions with high groundwater levels, this guarantee is essential for the value and saleability of your home. By a free expertise carried out by our experts, you avoid unnecessary costs and duplication of effort.

What is the permanent solution to a damp wall?

The only permanent solution for walls struggling with rising damp is to install a new, horizontal water barrier. At AquaConsult, we achieve this by injecting a high-quality damp-proofing gel under low pressure into the walls. This gel spreads completely into the masonry, forming an impenetrable barrier that prevents groundwater from migrating upwards into the walls.

Unlike temporary solutions such as damp-proof paint, injecting tackles the cause for the moisture problem at the source. This is the standard method recognised as the most sustainable technique for renovations in Flanders. It protects your home for life against structural damage, salt efflorescence and fungi.

How long should a wall dry after an injection?

After injecting, the wall must dry out completely. There is a fixed rule of thumb for this: count on one month of drying time for every two centimetres of wall thickness. A standard 20-centimetre Flemish exterior wall thus needs an average of 10 months to be completely dry. During this period, residual moisture or salt may still come out of the wall, which is normal for this process.

To speed up this process and prevent further damage, a good ventilation crucial. Only once the wall is completely dry and the salts have been treated can final finishing work such as plastering or wallpapering. An expert from AquaConsult can use an interim moisture measurement to determine exactly when you can safely start renovation work.

The best solution depends entirely on the cause, but for the common rising damp problem injecting the walls with a damp-proof gel is the most durable method. This technique forms a permanent horizontal barrier against rising groundwater. At AquaConsult, we use high-quality gel that soaks deep into the masonry, protecting the house for life. If the moisture problem is caused by rain penetrating the facade, facade impregnation the preferred moisture solution. For problems with condensation moisture or mould is a mechanical ventilation system the only structural solution. The cost of a wall injection is determined by several factors, making it more difficult to set a standard price in advance. The main variables are the total length of the walls, the thickness of the masonry and the type of injection agent required for your specific wall structure. The accessibility of the walls and the degree of salt load also play a role in the final price quote. At AquaConsult, we therefore take a transparent and tailor-made approach. During the free expertise Our experts will map the exact condition of your wall and calculate a fair price based on the materials and labour required. Moisture in the wall is usually only covered by your fire insurance if there is a sudden and unforeseen event, such as a water pipe leak, storm damage or a faulty appliance. In these cases, the insurer will often cover consequential damage to your walls, such as repairing plaster or wallpaper, but rarely the repair of the cause itself. Dormant problems such as rising damp, condensation moisture or penetrating moisture, are therefore usually not covered by your insurance. Insurers consider this a result of wear and tear or inadequate maintenance. Because these moisture problems can affect the stability of your property, it is wise to call in a specialist immediately at the first signs to prevent further, uninsured damage and depreciation in the value of your property.
